Tokyo battens down for feared attack

The Japanese Government has contingency plans to deal with a ballistic missile launch by North Korea, a possible step in the worsening nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.

News of the plans came as the United States Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, warned in Germany on Saturday that North Korea was on the verge of producing enough plutonium to make six to eight additional nuclear weapons by mid-year.

France is no longer an ally of the United States and the NATO alliance “must develop a strategy to contain our erstwhile ally or we will not be talking about a NATO alliance” the head of the Pentagon’s top advisory board said in Washington Tuesday.
